Interview with Kevin Coyne

interviewed by Frank Bangay

I felt that Marjory Razor Blade had a strong Music Hall influence to it. Are there any particular Music Hall comedians that have inspired you. ?

Many. My particular favourites being Rob Wilton, Billy Bennett, Frank Randall (I wrote a musical about him) and George Roby (I don't know whether the spelling is correct).  A little more humour is required in popular music. I tried to do my bit.

In relation to your cover of I Want My Crown on Marjory Razor Blade. What versions of the song are you familiar with.

I am familiar with the version from Big Joe Williams. As usual I couldn't remember the exact words so I added quite a few of my own. It was the spirit of the song I wanted to capture and I think I succeeded.

I felt your album Pointing the Finger was a very passionate record. From your sleeve notes to the record some of the songs like One Little Moment seem to relate to your experiences at the time. Could you say a bit about the things that inspired that song?

One Little Moment is about a flash of sanity and peace during a very difficult time. I was just recovering from a nervous breakdown when I wrote this and the stress involved was still very much in the air.

A number of your songs like Lonely Lovers on Matching Head and Feet and Peachtree Avenue on Knocking on Your Brain deal with the troubled side of suburbia. Do you see yourself as a commentator on these things?

Yes I do. Suburbia is to quote Ronnie Scott," the place were dead people smoke cigarettes at bus stops and the birds fly upside down because there's nothing to shit on". I've always had a dread of living in a neat and tidy house with tasteful wallpaper and a shortage of books. Suburbia is the place to find this. It's all compromise behind closed doors.
